Energy Efficiency Standards for Compressors on the Horizon

The U.S. Department of Energy has formally classified certain varieties of compressors as covered equipment under Part A–1 of Title III of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, as amended. A compressor is defined as a machine or apparatus that converts different types of energy into the potential energy of gas pressure for displacement and compression of gaseous media to any higher pressure values above atmospheric pressure. Covered compressors have a pressure ratio at full-load operating pressure greater than 1.3. Separately, the DOE is conducting rulemakings to consider test procedures and energy conservation standards for compressors.
