Energy Labelling Requirements for Some Appliances Updated

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a final rule that will update ranges of comparability and unit energy cost figures on EnergyGuide labels for dishwashers, furnaces, room air conditioners and pool heaters. These scales show the highest and lowest energy costs or energy efficiency ratings of models similar to the labelled product. Manufacturers will have to begin using this new information on product labels as of 23 May.

This final rule also sets 1 October 2019 as the compliance date for previously announced changes to EnergyGuide labels for room air conditioners. The FTC had proposed to set this date as 1 October 2018 but commenters said more time was needed because these changes will require manufacturers to completely redesign their packaging.
