Environmental Groups Sue FDA over Use of Perchlorate in Food Packaging

Several U.S. environmental and public health groups recently sued the Food and Drug Administration in a federal court in New York over a decision by the agency to deny a petition to prohibit the use of perchlorate in food packaging and other materials used to store and transport food. The groups argued in a press release that the FDA’s refusal to ban the use of this hormone-disrupting chemical “endangers the health of babies, pregnant mothers, and the development of infants’ brains.” The groups believe the FDA has sufficient evidence to adopt a ban and described the agency’s decision to continue to allow the use of this chemical as “reckless”. According to the press release, in addition to food packaging perchlorate is used in such products as rocket fuel, explosives, firearms and fireworks.
