FDA Approves Expanded Use of Vitamin D in Foods

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a final rule that, effective 18 July, amends its food additive regulations to provide for the expanded safe use of (i) vitamin D2 as a nutrient supplement in edible plant-based beverages intended for use as milk alternatives as well as in edible plant-based yogurt alternatives, and (ii) vitamin D3 as a nutrient supplement in milk at levels higher than those currently permitted. The FDA has set maximum levels of 84 IU per 100 g for vitamin D2 in edible plant-based beverages intended for use as milk alternatives and vitamin D3 in milk, as well as 89 IU per 100 g for vitamin D2 in edible plant-based yogurt alternatives.
