Mandatory Standards for Full-Size Baby Cribs Updated

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has updated the mandatory safety standard for full-size baby cribs by incorporating by reference all updates that have been made to the ASTM voluntary standard for such products. The updates will enter into force on 28 October unless the CPSC receives significant adverse comment by 22 August.

The standard for full-size baby cribs sets forth performance requirements and test procedures to determine the structural integrity of such products and also addresses bassinets, changing tables and similar accessories that attach to or rest on a crib. It contains design requirements addressing entanglement on crib corner post extensions as well as requirements for warning labels and instructional materials. The updated standard requires that all warnings be on the crib itself rather than in instructional materials because “on-product warnings stay with the product through multiple users, whereas an instruction manual could be discarded, lost, or otherwise not be available to another user of the product.” Other changes are editorial in nature.
