Mexico Adopts New Standards for Certain Air Conditioners

Mexico has established new mandatory energy efficiency standards (NOM-023-ENER-2018) for mini-split and multi-split air conditioners with a nominal cooling capacity ranging from 1 to 19,050 Wt. Excluded from this action are water-based heat pumps, units designed to be used with additional conduits, non-window type mobile units with an exhaust condensing duct, units with a frequency compressor and/or variable refrigerant flow (known as inverter units), and air conditioners with a two-speed compressor. The new standard includes definitions, product classifications, technical specifications, and requirements in the areas of sampling, acceptance criteria, test methods, labelling and conformity assessment.

The new requirements will enter into force on 14 November, although subject merchandise certified to the previous standard (NOM-023-ENER-2010) prior to that date may continue to be commercialised in Mexico until the depletion of any such stocks.
