Mexico Adopts New Standards for Portable Machinery, Wattmeters

The Mexican government recently adopted new mandatory standards for (1) portable machinery with an internal combustion motor generally for use in agricultural, forestry and household activities; and (2) wattmeters.

Portable Machinery. NOM-204-SCFI-2017 covers such portable machinery as lawn mowers, motorised manual hedge trimmers, chainsaws and backpack sprayers. The new standard includes definitions, technical specifications and test methods, marking and commercial information, and conformity assessment procedures. Among other things, subject merchandise must be marked with the model, brand and series. The new requirements will apply from 25 October 2019.

Wattmeters. NOM­044­SCFI­2017 updates the current metrological requirements for self-contained electromechanical wattmeters used to measure electricity. The new standard includes definitions, classification of covered equipment, electric characteristics, technical specifications, test methods and conformity assessment procedures. The updated requirements will enter into force on 26 February 2019.
