Mexico Provides Duty-Free Treatment to Certain Electric Vehicles

Mexico has provided duty-free treatment to certain electric motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons as well as certain electric motor vehicles for the transport of goods classified under HTSMX 8703.90.01 and 8704.90.01 in an effort to increase the availability of greener transportation alternatives and reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions. These products previously faced a most-favoured-nation duty rate of 15 percent. Motor vehicles other than electric vehicles imported into Mexico from non-free trade agreement partners typically face a 20 percent duty rate, which means that electric vehicles now have a significant competitive advantage from a duty perspective.
