Mexico Temporarily Increases Import Duty on Certain Iron and Steel Products

Mexico has increased from zero to 15 percent its most-favoured nation import duty on iron and steel products classified under HTSMX 7207.12.01, 7207.12.99 and 7224.90.02. This increase entered into force on 16 October and will be in place until 13 April 2020. Mexican authorities justify the duty hike on the basis of a need to monitor trade in these products as part of on-going efforts to detect and combat illegal import practices, such as triangulation, that are encouraged by the expanding global steel supply.
