Negotiations to Modernise Peru-China FTA Move Forward
Peru and mainland China held on 17-19 June in Lima a second round of talks aimed at maximising the benefits of their current bi-lateral FTA. According to Peruvian authorities, this effort will facilitate the activities of Peruvian importers and exporters and create additional opportunities for services companies, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, Peru hopes to attract mainland Chinese investment to key economic sectors such as technology, logistics and transportation.
During the second round, trade officials addressed such matters as rules of origin, customs affairs and trade facilitation, trade in services, investment and intellectual property. Additionally, the two sides discussed expanding the agreement to include chapters on competition and electronic commerce. The next round of talks is expected to take place in Beijing during the first half of August.
