Negotiations to Modernise Peru-China FTA Move Forward
Peru and mainland China held in late August in Beijing a third round of talks aimed at maximising the benefits of their current bi-lateral FTA. According to Peruvian authorities, this effort will facilitate the activities of Peruvian importers and exporters and create additional opportunities for services companies, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, Peru hopes to attract mainland Chinese investment to key economic sectors such as technology, logistics and transportation.
During the third round, trade officials discussed such matters as rules of origin and customs affairs and reportedly made substantial progress in the chapters related to investment, intellectual property, services and electronic commerce. In addition, the two sides agreed to deepen their bi-lateral commitments in the area of sanitary and phytosanitary measures in an effort to facilitate trade in, and ensure a more transparent framework for, agricultural, fishery and processed food products.
The next round of talks is expected to take place in Lima during the second half of September.
