New Energy Efficiency Standards for Split ACs under Consideration in Mexico

Mexican authorities are seeking input by 19 February on a proposal (PROY-NOM-023-ENER-2017) to establish new mandatory energy efficiency standards for mini-split and multi-split air conditioners with a nominal cooling capacity ranging from 1 to 19,050 Wt. Excluded from this proposal are water-based heat pumps, units designed to be used with additional conduits, non-window type mobile units with an exhaust condensing duct, units with a frequency compressor and/or variable refrigerant flow (known as inverter units), and air conditioners with a two-speed compressor. The proposal includes definitions, product classifications, technical specifications, and requirements in the areas of sampling, acceptance criteria, test methods, labelling and conformity assessment. The new requirements would enter into force 180 days from the date of publication of a final regulation in Mexico’s official journal.
