Peru and Mainland China Hold First Round of FTA Modernisation Talks

Peru and mainland China held 1-4 April in Beijing a first round of talks aimed at maximising the benefits of their current bi-lateral free trade agreement. According to Peruvian authorities, this effort will facilitate the activities of Peruvian importers and exporters and create additional opportunities for services companies, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, Peru hopes to attract mainland Chinese investment to its domestic telecommunications, transportation, logistics and financial services sectors.

During the first round trade officials addressed such matters as rules of origin, customs affairs, trade in services, investment, intellectual property, and sanitary and phytosanitary measures. Additionally, the two sides discussed the feasibility of including new chapters on competition and e-commerce and examined, within the context of the commission that administers the current FTA, existing hurdles related to origin procedures and customs co-operation as well as sanitary procedures for the exportation of Peruvian products to the mainland.

The next round of talks is expected to take place this June in Peru.
