Proposal to Relax Size Requirements for Grapefruit under Consideration

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service is proposing to implement a recommendation from the Citrus Administrative Committee to relax from 3-5/16 inches in diameter to three inches in diameter the minimum size requirements currently prescribed for grapefruit, including imported grapefruit, under the marketing order for oranges, grapefruit, tangerines and pummelos grown in Florida. AMS notes that this change would maximise shipments by allowing more grapefruit to be shipped to the fresh market and would also help reduce the losses sustained by the grapefruit industry during the September hurricane in Florida. Comments on this proposal may be submitted by 22 January 2018.
