U.S. Grade Standards for Fruits and Vegetables Revised

The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service has revised 41 U.S. grade standards for fresh fruits and vegetables, fruits and vegetables for processing, nuts and specialty crops by removing the “Unclassified” category from each standard. AMS notes that this revision has brought these grade standards in line with other recently amended standards and current terminology. The amendment also updates the standards to more accurately represent today’s marketing practices and provide the industry with greater flexibility. Grade standards are used as a common language among traders and serve as a means of measuring value in the marketing of agricultural products.
